For any General Manager, Fuller’s is a special company to work for. You’ll get lots of help and support from Head Office when you need it, but also plenty of encouragement to put your own spin on the pub.

You can take plenty of pride in the role too, knowing that Fuller’s ales, food and service has a reputation as some of the very best in the business.

You’ll need to be commercially minded, making the right decisions to keep customers pouring through the doors. Importantly though, you’ll be a people-person too - mindful that to many, you’re still a good old-fashioned ‘Landlord’.

And of course, you’ll have a team to look after. So we’re looking for somebody with true leadership qualities – able to keep both the customers and the team smiling.

Please understand that we will need proof of your right to work in the UK.

The Old Customs House is a jewel in the crown of the Fuller’s estate. Having led the pub and team to win the Griffin Trophy in 2017, Marc is embarking on a new adventure with Fuller’s in Oxford and we are now looking for a dynamic new General Manager to take advantage of the fantastic opportunities this prime location offers.

Built in 1790 and one of Portsmouth’s original Naval buildings, the Old Customs House is the only traditional high quality pub/restaurant in the popular shopping and leisure area of Gunwharf Quays. Its reputation as a great place for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a coffee in between shopping ensures that the pub is busy no matter what time or day of the week. Maintaining the majority of its original features, the trading space inside the pub is made up of numerous interconnecting rooms encouraging a cosy atmosphere but always accompanied by first class service and fabulous food and drink.

The Old Customs House is a high profile business. You will be a resilient General Manager who will continue to develop an already highly motivated and high performing team with clear succession plans in place.  Whilst the pub occupies an enviable location with large amounts of passing trade, competition in the local area is fierce with numerous casual dining eateries and maintaining its reputation alongside a strong marketing strategy will ensure its continued success and growth. There is a tremendous opportunity to maximise an already strong evening and weekend trade. The pub is renowned for impeccable standards throughout and you will have a keen eye for detail ensuring this is maintained.

There are a few practical skills which the ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate. The pub turns over £2.1 million per annum with just under £1 million in food revenue so volume food skills and operational knowledge are a must whilst striking a balance which will allow you to deliver fantastic levels of service. An ability to maximise events and small function revenue would be helpful. The right candidate will be able to work closely with Gunwharf Quays management company to maximise local marketing initiatives whilst protecting the excellent relationship we have with them.

This is a live in position which comes with a separate two bedroom flat in Gunwharf Quays
