The Ivy House is recruiting a General Manager

The Ivy House, London’s first co-operatively owned community pub, is looking for an experienced and committed General Manager to lead our front of house operation and help us deliver a high quality experience for our customers and community, and a profitable, resilient pub for the long term. Working with the Management Committee to help set the strategic direction of the business, you will provide strong, confident leadership, inspiration and development to our paid staff, including the Head Chef and Events Manager, bringing them together in an effective and motivated team. You will have a passion for great customer service, beer, food and entertainment, and a strong sense of community. Your vision for the future of this unique pub will be matched by great organisational and communication skills and a flexible, can-do attitude. Key responsibilities

  • Managing front of house to deliver high standards and a warm welcome
  • Line managing staff including Assistant Manager, Head Chef and Events Manager
  • Delivering a comprehensive drink, food and events offer
  • Delivering on turnover and profitability
  • Managing stock and cash
  • Ensuring appropriate use of systems and procedures
  • Leading on compliance with licensing and other regulatory frameworks
  • Maintaining the pub’s public profile and positive relationship with neighbours
  • Liaising closely with Management Committee on key issues

Person specification

Essential:

  • Strong, confident leadership style
  • People person with great interpersonal and communication skills
  • Collaborative and constructive approach
  • Proven track record for delivering profit
  • High standards of customer service and presentation
  • Experience of delivering a high quality real ale and craft beer offer
  • Experience of delivering a high quality food offer
  • Ability to deliver high levels of compliance with licensing, health and safety and other regulations
  • Strong administrative skills
  • Good understanding of community pub status and interest in delivering social impact

Desirable:

  • Experience of working in a non-profit venture, cultural space, live music venue or community project
  • Experience of working in a committee-led environment, such as a constitutional or sports club

About the Ivy House

The Ivy House is a Grade II listed building with a beautiful panelled interior, three generous trading spaces and a famous music hall stage. It has a rich cultural history and a thriving local community, in whose lives it plays a central role. It was sold off in 2012 and, after being bought by a developer, became the first known pub to be secured by a local community using the provisions of the Localism Act to list it as an Asset of Community Value. In 2013 it was purchased using funds raised from the voluntary sector, and reopened under the management of Ivy House Community Pub Limited, a Community Benefit Society. Around 370 local people are members (shareholders) of the Society, with a Management Committee acting on their behalf in the capacity of Directors. Assets are held on behalf of the local community, with profits reinvested in the business. There is scope for a modest distribution to shareholders when the business is in overall profit.

The Ivy House is run on a managed community pub model, meaning that the Management Committee are elected by members to run the Society’s affairs and set the strategic direction of the business. They manage the assets, employ staff and make key financial decisions, while the General Manager and paid staff are responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the pub. After 6 years of trading, the Committee is working with members, staff and the local community to refresh the Ivy House vision so that we can maximise its potential and secure its future for the long term. The Ivy House is committed to being a strong community project as well as a great pub, and we are always seeking ways to meet local needs and increase our social impact. We currently have funding from the Community Business Trade Up Programme, run by the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) in partnership with Power to Change, to help us grow as a successful community enterprise. We are also a member of the British Institute of Innkeeping, Plunkett Foundation’s Community Pub Membership Network, Co-operatives UK, Locality, and Community Southwark.
